Meet the ‘silent assassin’

- TRAVIS MEYN

HE has been dubbed the “silent assassin”, a spin sensation who has left the Big Bash League bamboozled.

Brisbane Heat teenager Mujeeb Ur Rahman is world cricket’s next awesome Afghan.

Mujeeb is officially listed as an off-spinner, but he bowls with numerous variations and also like a traditional leggie.

At 17, Mujeeb has already left his mark on the BBL and there is more magic to come from a bowler who is near impossible to pick.

Mujeeb collected his first BBL wickets in Saturday night’s 15-run loss to Hobart at Metricon Stadium.

Finishing with 2-23 from four overs, Mujeeb proved he is the Heat’s x-factor and could also be Brisbane’s next cult hero.

Mujeeb speaks little English, but that hasn’t stopped him from making an impression on his Heat teammates.

“He is a bit of a silent assassin,” leg-spinner Mitch Swepson said.

“He is quiet and doesn’t speak a lot of English, but he’s embraced the culture.

“He’s always on time and happy to stick around with the lads after.

“He’s always got a smile on his face, even though he might not know where he is at times.”

Mujeeb has at least six different deliveries, some out of the front of the hand, the back and a wrong-un that picked up the wicket of Alex Doolan on Saturday night.

Fellow Afghan Rashid Khan has dominated the BBL with Adelaide and the Heat are hoping Mujeeb can do the same.
