EVEN after the first wave of Boxing Day bargain-hunters, there is still time to take advantage of post-Christmas sales.

Rainy weather pushed customers into Cairns’ main shopping centres, where they jostled to make the most of extreme bargains at the end of the silly season.

Cairns Central’s shopping centre was so packed out that traffic wardens directed vehicles through the three levels of carparks.

Inside was just as hectic, with customers trying to grab the best deal possible.

Cairns Central store Mainie owner, Charmaine Saunders, said the sale on her items would carry on into the new year.

“It’s always busy, it’s a fantastic opportunity for us to offer some really beautiful scarfs at very discounted prices for our customers,” she said.

“I think people are really grateful that they’re able to get something that they’ve been looking at for some time, or have really wanted to get, at a great price.”

She said trade had started strongly on Boxing Day, and it was “busier than ever” at her store.

“It’s going to continue to be very busy,” she said. “We will continue this sale. Most of the items that we put out for our clearance have been discontinued, so we’re hoping to clear that stock so we can bring in some fabulous new Aboriginal art designs for early 2019.”

Bentley Park mum Jessica Munt took her four daughters Yulara, 7, Layla, 6, Lola, 5, and Talia, 3, to buy belated Christmas gifts at Target and Smiggle inside Cairns Central yesterday.

“The girls want to spend their Christmas money that they got from family,” she said.

She said her family made the decision to give cash instead of physical gifts because there was more bang for their buck during post-Christmas sales.

“My girls got less toys but more cash for Christmas because we often go to the Boxing Day sales after Christmas,” she said.

Stratford’s Kalara Quabba said she didn't usually shop during Boxing Day, but had been eyeing off a few items at Rebel and Myer.

“I wanted to get some new gym gear and take advantage of the sales, because those items can be a little pricey,” she said.
