Jobs to deliver more people
IT’S of no surprise there is demand for chefs and other hospitality workers in Cairns, but civil engineers, project managers and building designers are sought-after too.
Interestingly there are 36 jobs for civil engineers in the Far North advertised on SEEK.
Employers also are looking for building designers and project managers.
There are many road upgrades planned and, of course, building projects such as the Crystalbrook Collection’s new hotels, the pending start of Nova City’s first tower and smaller projects springing off the back of these bigger construction jobs.
In the wings is the Cairns Convention Centre expansion, wharf upgrades as part of the $120 million shipping channel dredging project, the proposed Global Tourism Hub in the CBD and a $55 million extension of the domestic terminal at Cairns Airport.
James Cook University is expanding and CQUniversity also has growth plans requiring special levels of expertise.
While, it is hoped some of the jobs will go to residents of the Far North, in reality many will come from out of town by people drawn to the region for a lifestyle change and without the traffic snarls, overcrowding, parking dramas and other drawbacks of big city living.
We have more and improving education, shopping, dining and entertaining offerings and housing is much cheaper than in southern cities.
Hi-tech systems and the internet make working in the Far North an easy place to connect to the rest of the world as well as an airport with excellent domestic and international connections. Nick Dalton Deputy editor
