Aged care upgrades

SENIOR residents living in communitie­s across Cape York will benefit from significan­t upgrades to local residentia­l aged care facilities thanks to almost $1.6 million in federal funding. The funding will enable extensions, refurbishm­ents and improvemen­ts at five aged care facilities in Cape York — Kowanyama, Mapoon, Napranum, Wujal Wujal, and Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council.

Bird sightings

PEOPLE living within the Cook Shire are being urged to report sightings of the invasive Indian myna bird. Cook Shire Council’s Biosecurit­y Team and South Cape York Catchments group are working to stop the spread and protect the region’s beautiful native species. To report a sighting, phone 4069 5444 or 4069 5443.

Road is now open

AURUKUN Shire Council has advised that Aurukun Access Road is now open to 4WD vehicles only. As of January 4, permits are required for all vehicles in access of five tonnes to use the road.

Christmas lights win

AURUKUN Shire resident Hariet Pootchemun­ka is the winner of the 2018 Aurukun Christmas lights competitio­n. She received a return Skytrans flight to Cairns and $50 power credit. Thomas Korkatain and Roxanne Yunkaporta were awarded second place and Dalma Peemungina came third for her display.
