HOCKEY CLUB PLAN TO LURE SINGAPORE
$2.7m upgrade ideal for international hockey
CAIRNS Hockey’s $2.7m upgrade could soon bring an international hockey team to the Cairns North venue.
The squad for the upcoming Singapore tour, where teams will play against the Singaporean junior national team and compete in the International Singapore 6s, has been named, and features some of the re- gion’s brightest hockey stars.
Only two weeks remain until the squad flies out for the south east Asian country, an experience which played a fundamental role in the advanced development of Australian Country representative Haylee Brodin and Quensland Scorcher Caitlyn Whipp.
Cairns Hockey officials are hopeful the Singapore national hockey program will soon announce a visit to the Far North venue, which is considered to be among the best in Queensland.
“There is a real excitement at Cairns Hockey, and we hope this is just the beginning of national and international teams wanting to train and play at Cairns Hockey,” Cairns regional coaching director David McNeil said.
McNeil will coach the team, which will play a series of games against Singapore’s junior nationals before the twoday International 6s tournament on March 2-3.
The representative team will be presented their uniforms at the Cairns Hockey clubhouse on Wednesday, February 20.
