MaccasSmashers revealed to readers soon

- MATTHEW MCINERNEY

IT has been a long and tough preseason but MaccasSmashers’ staff will soon finalise its squad for the upcoming NRL SuperCoach competition.

The mighty Smashers, my own entry to the annual fantasy sports competition, have generally been a mid-pack performer in previous seasons.

A team that holds its own in the head-to-head leagues but gets burned in the overall competition. Scouting the MaccasSmashers line-up for 2019 is well underway and in the month leading up to kick-off (31 days to be exact), I’ll reveal my 25-strong squad.

The first signing is always the toughest, and there’s a few handy stars – and tough decisions – to be made before I click that big, green plus sign.

At hooker, I’m tossing up between the established workhorse and Origin legend Cameron Smith, and Souths dynamo Damien Cook.

The halves may well include former Northern Pride champion Jake Clifford, though that may be one of the last positions I settle as we await Cowboys coach Paul Green’s decision on the position.

Cowboys teammate Jason Taumalolo is worth a look, though the forwards are a long way from sorted.

There’s a bit of speculation as to where rising Newcastle and Queensland star Kalyn Ponga will play.

Club coach Nathan Brown has him working in the halves, he made his name at fullback and somehow starred for Queensland at lock.

In MaccasSmashers’ lineup, his role isn’t set just yet, but you can almost guarantee he’ll be in the starting XIII.

Keep an eye on the Post, both online and the print edition, as I start to reveal my squad.
