Rovers’ bowlers get a timely boost

- ROWAN SPARKES

A 83-RUN win over Barron River will give Rovers’ bowling attack a timely confidence boost, after they ripped through the Bulldogs’ batting order to get them all out for 41.

However, the team’s bats will need to stand up if they are to challenge the Cricket Far North’s defending champions on home soil.

Despite walking away from Griffiths Park with the bonuspoint win on Saturday, Rovers skipper Tom Lever will be wanting more out of his batting order next week.

The team’s leading runscorer for 2018-19, Bobby Brix was the only player to make a dent against the Barron River bowlers, going on to score 61.

The second-best score on the team was 11, while two batsmen were dismissed for 1, and another two for naught.

Like many clubs this season, finding consistency has been the biggest challenge for Rovers, especially with the number of games and training sessions called off in recent months due to wet weather.

This weekend, Rovers will make the trip up to Atherton’s Loder Park in a bid to keep their finals hopes alive.

With just a handful of games left in the Cricket Far North regular season, returning to Cairns with anything other than a win will make a finals appearance very difficult, with Atherton still to play a catch-up game with Cassowary Coast.
