Police, citizens in bravery awards
POLICE and members of the public will be honoured with bravery awards in Cairns today.
Police Sergeant Conrad Van Egmond will be presented with the Queensland Police Valour Medal for displaying exceptional bravery in hazardous circumstances by disarming an offender in Burpengary north of Brisbane in 2001. Senior Constable Ben Lloyd will be presented the RSPCA Award for saving two puppies from a vehicle plunged in flood waters at Coen in 2018.
Three members of the community will be acknowledged for their actions with the Commissioner’s Certificates awarded to two community members who attempted to save the life of a motorist following a traffic crash at Redlynch on December 27, 2017. Another man will be awarded the Assistant Commissioner’s Certificate for assisting police at Mount Sheridan on August 27, 2017.
A number of service medals and Assistant Commissioner’s Certificates of Appreciation will be handed to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services personnel and a number of overseas service medals, a citation for conspicuous bravery and a citation for hazardous overseas service in Afghanistan will be given to Australia Federal Police officers.
A police service spokeswoman said Queensland Speaker and Mulgrave MP Curtis Pitt and Cairns MP Michael Healy would be presenting the awards at the Cairns Regional Council civic reception rooms at 9.45am.
