War-cries open day of action
By Riley O’Sullivan, Year 8, St Augustine’s College
ON February 13, Saint Augustine’s College held yet another superb swimming carnival at the Smithfield Pool.
This turned out to be an action-packed day of unexpected turns and surprising results.
Some students competed in the many different championship events at two levels, while others had a go at the novelty events, all working towards victory and fun.
The day began with the Year 12 boys from each of the houses performing a marchpast and leading a war-cry, in accordance with their house themes, which varied from ”Fix-It Phelan” to ”Walter Warriors”, bolstering the team spirit of each house.
There was an unexpected finish from the war-cries, however, when it was declared a four-way tie, giving 50 points to each house and giving no clue as to who might win the event.
The day moved on and championship events such as the 100m freestyle began the in-pool action.
These championship events were then followed by the novelty events, fun races based on teamwork that were yet another way to earn points for participants’ houses.
The event went smoothly and in accordance with college expectations.
Students looked out for each other and kept up their spirits throughout the day, which ended in another shock turn of events.
Phelan finished fourth again, with Heavey third and Walter second, just 35 points behind Reginald, who triumphed yet again.
A special mention to the two boys who broke records, Lucas Kresevic and Ike Martinez, and also to all of the age champions, who put the most points towards their houses for their age group.
Students now look forward to more sporting events for the year, and to the 2020 swimming carnival as well.
