Vikings take spoils in first raid
CAIRNS Vikings might have been too good for Cairns Falcons in the weekend’s first junior gridiron game of the season, but the real winner on the night was the Cairns Gridiron Association.
In Friday night’s clash at Vico Oval, the Vikings skipped away to finish as 38-21 winners, with teenage tearaway Saifu Savage causing all sorts of havoc for the Falcons.
Junior co-ordinator Luke Threlfall said the match showcased the development of junior gridiron in the region and the potential for a junior gridiron competition in Cairns in the future.
“The kids showed all the skills and knowledge they’ve been learning over the last couple of months,” he said. “It was great to see them put it all together, especially considering it was a lot of the kids’ first game of football.”
Cairns Gridiron Association president Warren Lee said he hoped to expand the two-team set-up into a four-team competition next season.
“The interest is certainly there and we are still building up our players,” he said.
“There’s a real mixed culture of sports coming in – we’ve had rugby league and union players, some great AFL and soccer players, and mixed martial artists come in as well.”
New players are encouraged to attend training on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5pm at Vico Oval.
The two teams will play Friday night games at Vico Oval for the next six weeks.
