QUEENSLAND country selection beckons for a few Cairns Reef Sharks following their strong performances at the Queensland Country water polo championships.

Cairns’ Shuhei Fukaya was named tournament MVP and will be in line for selection, while Cairns Water Polo president Jesse O’Hara believes several other Far North players are in with a chance.

The Queensland country selectors were in the Far North for the tournament, with the soon-to-be-named squad set to head to the Australian country championships in May on the Gold Coast.

Maté Havas is also a name to watch for when the team is announced.

“In the ladies, there was some sharp shooting from Emma Graham and Camille Reed; I think the Queensland country selectors will be on the lookout for a few of our Cairns players,” O’Hara said.

“We like to have our players going away and playing rep water polo. That is what we are about, improving our players and then hopefully they can bring that back to Cairns. Hopefully the Cairns players can show everyone what they are made of, if they get selected.”

Gold Coast coach Luke Ingwersen is looking forward to bringing the best from country Queensland together.

“We all come together now into the same team and press on for the Australian country championships,” he said. “Enemies become friends. Cairns almost beat us. I would imagine they will have a few players in it. That is great for the development of water polo.”
