Baynes close to returning for the Celtics

MAREEBA big man Aron Baynes is edging closer to a return in the NBA.

Speaking last week, general manager and President of Basketball Operations for the Boston Celtics Danny Ainge did not have a specific update about Baynes’ left foot bruising but said he will probably be back later this month or in early March.

The Far North product missed games earlier this season when he had surgery on a broken left finger.

■ Cairns jockey Sonja Wiseman rode two second place finishers in Darwin last Wednesday in a rare midweek Northern Territory meeting.

She came closest to breaking through in the first race of the day with Quicker Than Slick running second by half a length.

Wiseman took two rides at Alice Springs Turf Club on Saturday.

■ Cairns Saints junior Austin Harris starred in a Gold Coast Suns trial and testing day earlier this month.

Almost 100 footballer­s put their best foot forward to be named in the initial squad of around 70 for the Suns under-16 developmen­t preseason phase.

In the two trial games that were played, Harris was named best on ground in the Gold Coast Suns White team, which beat a red team by three points.

The under-16 Gold Coast Suns Academy Squad for 2019 will be announced on Monday, February 25, at the conclusion of two weeks of trial games.

■ NORTH Cairns junior Elisha King is perfect in AFLW, making it two wins from two games for the North Melbourne Kangaroos on Friday night. The Kangaroos rolled reigning premiers the Western Bulldogs, who had Mossman’s Tiarna Ernst in their side, by 31 points, underlinin­g their status at the AFLW team to beat.

The Kangaroos, one of two clubs added to the fledging competitio­n this year, won 8.5 (53) to 3.4 (22) on Friday night in Launceston and are unbeaten after three rounds.

King made her debut in a win over the GWS Giants earlier this month.

■ Far North hoops prodigy Tamuri Wigness put on a show at the Basketball Without Borders Global Camp at All Star Weekend. The exciting point guard helped lead his team to a win in the men’s final and was named to the event’s All-Tournament Team.
