INNISFAIL Great to see the sun come out in the region; make sure you keep hydrated on the course with the extra heat around. The weather looks good to help dry out the last wet spots on the course, so we look forward to some great scoring this week. As always, thanks to the members who continuously give their time to look after the course. Some members put in more than 25 hours for the week. Thanks very much. Wednesday Allsporters competition: The Allsporters finally got a start and you needed some great golf to get into the running for the prizes. Well done Vaughn Smith for an impressive two over off the stick and 23 points. 1st V Smith 23 points, 2nd C Allman 20 points. NTP J Lombardi. Innisfail Glass & Aluminium 4BBB: Everyone was a weatherman on Friday to predict the best time to play on Saturday. As it turned out, there was a sprinkle of rain in the morning and the sun came out in the arvo. Thirty-three players turned up to play golf with a few players coming from other clubs in the region, which is always great to see. Scoring seemed to be easy with many teams coming in with more than 40 points. Troy Kopp and Lance Masina had the best of the afternoon rounds with 44 points. But the flyers who came out of the morning blocks on a mission were John Tissizis, John Abbott and Brett Gould. They lit up the scoring with 46 and 47 points! Well done, boys. 1st J Tissizis and B Gould 47 points, 2nd J Tissizis and J Abbott 46 points. NTPs 1st and 10th T Kopp; 2nd and 11th D Smith; 3rd and 12th L Peters; 4th and 13th D Smith; 5th and 14th A Ghetti; 6th and 15th B Gould; 7th and 16th T Kopp; 8th and 17th Eagle’s nest; 9th and 18th T Kopp. Junior golf: It was a pleasure coaching the juniors on Sunday. Fifteen juniors turned up for the first clinic of 2019. We honed our skills and went over the fundamentals we learnt last year. It will be a great year for the juniors as we will be electing captains to help the coaches with set up and scoring of junior competitions along with a dedicated day for junior competitions and a dedicated weekday after school to hold a practice session. Upcoming events: Today’s competition: Vandeleur & Todd Solicitors Stableford, tee-off times 7.30am and noon. Wednesday Allsporters: Tee-off times noon and 3pm. Friday competition: Tee-off times noon and 3pm. MAREEBA After a three-week layoff due to very wet weather, Mareeba golfers were finally back on the links again for our postponed opening weekend. The course is in wonderful condition and a credit to the volunteers who have worked long and hard to have it ready for the weekend. The next thing is for the members to arise from their slumbers and get out and play. A special thanks to BABA Curry Restaurant and Gordon Redding for their sponsorship. MILLAA MILLAA What’s better than the cold drinks, great food, friendly atmosphere and friendly hosts at the Millaa Millaa Hotel? Not much except for their wonderful 2 Ball Ambrose Trophy Day. A further week of fine weather and some heroic hours by the greens staff had the course in tip top condition. Light breezes and shy storms to the north and south made golfing ideal. So to make things interesting, the draw for partners saw some strange bedfellows. Some very odd couples indeed. Graham Murray and Richard “Ruthless” Sullivan though proved teamwork made the dream work carding a 1 over off the bat 70 for a net 61 and a half and the win. Sols did lament that Graham must have come from the same stock as Doug Cameron because he formed a union and made Sols all the heavy lifting. Second place went to the gun team of Warrick Howarth and Justin Cifuentes whose 5 handicap couldn’t get them home for first. Easily a best gross though with one under 68. Good golf boys. Greg Taylor and Alan Hapgood came in third with net 64 and a quarter. Not bad given Greg was playing a lot of golf being in two teams. NTPs 1/10 Warrick and Justin, 5/10 Sol and Graham, 8/17 Bruce and Matt Buchow. Longest putt, Sols and Graham again. There is a strong rumour that Warrick and Happy would have played like tour pros had they known there was a bottle of Small Batch Bundy in the first prize hamper. Better luck next year boys. Next week we play for the Malanda Rural Supplies Stableford Trophy. Thanks again to Millaa Millaa Hotel for putting on such a great day, and it was great to see a lot of visitors joining in the fun. One question, how did Warrick manage to swap his Canadian Club for the Small Batch? Royal Millaa Millaa, a great little golf club.
