TFNQDBA WALFORD WINS OPEN MENS SINGLES Jason Walford from Marlin Coast Bowls Club was crowned the District Men’s Singles Champion on Sunday Afternoon at Atherton Bowls Club. Walford won convincingly, beating Mick Frese from Mossman Bowls Club 25, 14. Early in the game the scores were locked at 7 all, then Walford took control of the game leading 24, 7. Frese tried valiantly to fight back, but Walford was not to be denied finally getting the one shot he needed to claim the championship. Jason deserved his win, being the dominant player in the singles event which was played over 3 days at West Cairns, Mossman and Atherton Clubs. He got to the final defeating John Phillips 25, 5 in his semi-final having also accounted for Ian Fisher 25,19 and Matty Andrews 25, 11 in post sectional play. He also dominated his section on the Saturday. Mick got to the final by defeating Kevin (Kiwi) Deegan 25,23, and Clive Flannagan 25, 7 in his previous rounds. Earlier in the day the spectators present were treated to a fantastic game in the District Championship pairs between eventual winners Colin Kelly and Ash White from Edge Hill Memorial Bowls Club and Jason Walford and Darren Curry from Marlin Coast Bowls Club. In a game that had the spectators on the edge of their seats from the first bowl, the scores chopped and changed throughout the game with the teams going into the last end locked together at 17 all. As the skips crossed over to play their last 2 bowls, Jason and Daren held a two shot advantage. Kelly’s first drive missed the head and Turner, in trying to cover the back, rolled Kelly’s and White’s bowls behind his own back bowl. Kelly duly ensured the win by driving the kitty into the ditch behind his team’s back bowl and winning the championship 18,17. Congratulations to both pairs on such a great and entertaining final. Earlier this month the composite Four of Ben Cribbin (Edge Hill), Dave Spowart (Edge Hill), Hayden Hohnke (Babinda) and Mitch Styles (Marlin Coast) overcame the Marlin Coast four of Gary Davies, Clive Flannagan, Neil Robson and Stuart Mann 26, 16 to win the District Championship Fours Title. Overall we saw a great month of Championship Bowls and District President Bernie Wolland noted the standard displayed throughout the championships was of an extremely high standard and he also thanked the four clubs – Atherton, Marlin Coast, Mossman Memorial and Marlin Coast – who hosted the events. He also thanked all officials, umpires and match committee members who contributed to the successful running of this year’s events. WEST CAIRNS Tuesday afternoon:- 1st:- Royston, N.Kehrer, H. WEST CAIRNS MEMORIAL Seventeen players participated last Monday in social mixed lawn bowls at West Cairns Bowls under the covered green. A couple of sharp passing showers did not deter the dedicated bowlers. We are still looking for more players to join us each week for the game commencing at 1.30pm and lasting three hours with a substantial afternoon tea provided. Any registered bowler available on a Monday afternoon would be made most welcome. All that is required is to contact selector Rosemary on phone 0409 624 623 before 1pm and be present at the club at 1.15pm when the cards are called. No competitions are held and the theme of the afternoon is to enjoy a social afternoon with like-minded bowlers unaffected by the weather conditions. More information on the club could be provided by Rosemary. Even though the title of the club may suggest we are involved in past military activities, this is not the case as all of the original veterans have passed on.
