Green light at last for shelter

- MARK MURRAY

A NEW animal shelter at Port Douglas has been given the green light following months of mediation between Paws and Claws and nearby businesses.

The facility was ticked off by the council last year, only for an appeal to be lodged to the planning and environment courts on the day of settlement for the Teamsters Close property.

Some business owners and residents opposed the project due to noise concerns and alleged adverse affects on property. Mediation between the parties began on November 30 with a successful resolution reached last week.

Paws and Claws president Michael Kerr said it was full steam ahead for the animal refuge, which will hold 38 dogs in a soundproof, indoor enclosure.

“While I am disappointed in the way we had to get to this outcome, the committee and I are extremely excited that we are now back on track with the goal to build this well-needed facility,” he said.

“The only thing slowing us down is money, so we will be doing everything we can to get the needed funds as quickly as possible.”

There is no time frame on when the development will begin. The shelter will offer pet boarding, a specialised puppy section, cattery, grooming facility and retail items.

Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu said the mediation process was a great outcome for everyone involved and justified the decision to approve the project.

“This is a really special moment for everyone who has been fighting hard for this animal refuge,” she said.

“We will continue to push strongly to get this facility going and provide security for our homeless animals.

“We will also continue to work closely with the organisation to ensure neighbouring properties are not adversely impacted by the development.”
