Business working a treat

- PETE MARTINELLI peter.martinelli@news.com.au

DOG owner and injured miner Jase Mathews grew a hobby into an all-natural ‘chop-shmackin’ business.

A freak accident in 2013 left him out of work – it was his pups that helped him out of a rough time.

Over a few Christmas drinks with friends, the former butcher realised he could turn his old trade into a money-spinner and keep his best pals Sirrah and Turbo rolling in treats at the same time. Tuff Dog Treats was born. The all-natural animal meat treats are now available at 23 retailers in the Far North and also online.

The secret, he says, is using locally sourced people-grade protein from Byrnes Meats.

“Flip open a packet of commercially made treats and you wouldn’t want to eat the ingredients yourself,” Mr Mathews said. “Dogs can tell these treats are just what they are – I haven’t met a dog that doesn’t like them.”

He said pet owners were now prepared to shell out more to feed their best friends.

“Dogs are being treated for diabetes and heart diseases at four or five years old – these are conditions they normally wouldn’t get,” he said.

He said treat scraps were donated to Hartley’s Crocodile Farm’s breeding crocs.

“The quality and yield of their eggs has improved too,” Mr Mathews said.

I HAVEN’T MET A DOG THAT DOESN’T LIKE THEM.
