On imputation debate

-

In the current dividend imputation debate, Terry and Trevor (CP, 28/2) are telling us a lot about socialism. It’s not just the wealth of the rich they want, they want all other people’s money. Yours, too. Rashmi, Edmonton Re Franking credits. If an individual or a self-managed superfund invests in shares in a company, it is no different to investing in your own business and as such tax is paid and refunds are claimable. If the Labor party takes away these credits a lot of people will look for other investment choices and can you imagine what damage that will do? There will be job losses and companies may even go broke. How is that good for the economy and the jobs that Labor say they want to protect? Beth Kanimbla degree to read contracts, just a bit of intelligence and knowing what you want. I have had six houses and I have negotiated to where I’ve been happy with the contract. After 40 years of investing, when possible I bought and own 2000 shares. Your inference is what? David, Holloways Beach Re: Page 1 (CP, 28/2). The LNP and ALP don’t care about our kids’ future anymore. They only care about building big towers in the air in Brisbane so the MPs can relax in airconditioned comfort while the kids suffer in 40-degree heat in Far North Queensland classrooms. Kyle, Bentley Park The skinny building in the CP (27/2) made me laugh. Built on swampland. Will that be Cairns’ answer to the leaning tower of Pisa? GTHO Manunda The situation with the tree branch near the council library shows just how big a farce the flying fox rot has become: Enough. Might be time for ratepayers and anyone else affected by this stuff to think about class action against Greens and whoever else is responsible for putting the health and well-being of Cairns residents and tourists below that of these filthy pests. Bazza Mareeba The Calcino local interest feature (CP, 23/2) on bat removal guidelines from Cairns Library keeps giving. It’s now been revealed the State Government is not empowered to interfere in a council responsibility. Mayor Manning is on record saying the Newman LNP government placed responsibility for bat management on his council. The LNP Federal Government’s endangered species listing has overriding powers. Ratepayer, Cairns. If it’s the “wettest in 40 years” (CP, 28/2) and the “hottest since 1995”, then it’s only fairly normal weather, isn’t it? It’s only “extreme weather” in a narrow statistical context, not in an action movie context. Miss T, Tolga Australia’s largest coal mining company Glencore will cap its coal output with no increase in production or new mines. Pressure from shareholders and the shift away from coal because of the risk to our survival from climate change. Realist, Cairns. (Editorial CP, 28/2). Another risk is created by wide centre lines on range roads – even less room for super-slow uphill cyclists. If our ranges are dangerous enough to warrant wide centre lines then cyclists should be banned. Higgs, Tolga
