Canoe believe it

By Kibbim Titasey, Year 9, St Augustine’s College

Victor Sabatino and Xavier-Ray David-Williams were among the St Augustine’s College students that took to the water at Lake Tinaroo as part of the school’s first boarder’s camp for 2019. But it wasn’t all fun and games as Kimmim Titasey reports,

LAST weekend the first boarders’ camp of the year was held at Lake Tinaroo, Camp Barrabadeen.

The smell of campfire lingers in my nostrils.

The breeze blew through the trees, creating a melody for all to hear.

The bubbling sound of a brook can be heard in the distance.

Peace and tranquillity settle upon my soul and everything feels right.

Last Saturday about 60 boarders embarked on the first boarders’ camp of 2019, leaving behind homework and technology – yes our mobile phones – which for many was a confronting requirement.

The concern of no Instagram, Snapchat or access to any social media quickly disappeared once the ambience of the bush, conversation with each other and the multitude of water sports kicked in.

We arrived to the picturesque view of the Tablelands landscape, with many fun and entertaining activities for the students to engage in such as canoeing, stand up paddle boarding and tubing.

Although the main theme of going outdoors is to muck around and have fun, the camp also provided the students with the opportunity to relax and reflect.

Not only did the students mould many memorable moments, many new friendships were forged along the way.

The camp was only possible thanks to the hard working and selfless Saints boarding supervisors who put aside their own weekend for the benefit of the boarding community.

The boarders are very grateful for the experience and look forward to the next boarders’ camp in term two.
