AUSTRALIA has 96 critically endangered animal species, as listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Over the coming months, we will be publishing a profile of each of them, looking at the threats to their survival, what’s being done to protect them, and what more needs to be done.

Critically endangered is the highest threat level that can be assigned to a wild species (lower levels are endangered and vulnerable).

These species are either facing an extremely high risk of extinction or have numbers which decreased (or will) by 80 per cent within three generations.

Some of these species may already be extinct.

Did you know that the most endangered animals in the world are gradually facing extinction and may completely disappear in the next few years?

Well, the list of the most endangered animals that are threatened by extinction features some animals that you could not even imagine.

The sad bit is that most of UNDER THREAT: Mountain pygmy possums are on the endangered list. these animals are mainly affected by the loss of their habitation, mainly due to human activities or the climatic changes.
