More to leadership than people realise

By Connor Simpson and Makenzie Webber, Year 5, St Andrew’s Catholic College

A MAN from Caritas named Kerry Drysdale came to run a Just Leadership Day on February 27.

Student leadership teams from St Andrew’s Catholic College, Holy Cross Primary School, St Joseph’s Primary School and St Michael’s Primary School all attended the event which was hosted in All Saints’ Theatre at our college.

The day was broken up into three sessions.

During session one we played a game called get the water in the bucket. We listened to a talk about a girl who had to walk three kilometres every day to get five litres of water for her family.

It took time out of school for her to go get the water.

We were then given a string and held a bit each and got a beach ball then tried to pass it three times.

These games were planned for us to work together as a team.

In session two, we looked at what makes good leaders. We heard that good leaders “aspire not to have more but to be more” (Oscar Ramiro).

We had to decide what qualities good leaders had.

Our group came up with reliable, committed, trustworthy, motivate others, humble, empower others, act justly, are inclusive and develop vision.

In the session, we had to plan a project that we could run to either raise awareness or funds for Caritas this year.

We brainstormed a whole heap of ideas and decided that it would be good to have Caritas tins that people could donate into, run a bacon and sausage sizzle, to a play to raise awareness and perform it at a junior years assembly or have a special meal where the winners get served just because they are lucky.

These sessions made us realise how lucky we are to live in Australia and have access to clean water, healthy food and a great education. We are truly blessed. Thank you to our teachers for organising today.
