RESULTS for week ending March 3: With the weather continuing to improve and that slight hint of autumn in the early morning air, golf is ramping up into full swing at Mareeba Golf Club. It’s unusual to have the monthly medal rounds held on consecutive weekends, but that’s what happens sometimes. Congratulations to Enid Leonard and Grant Cupitt for taking out their respective medals. A great field of 80 played the first round of the Drummond Cairns Cup on Sunday with some good scores coming in. See the full results on the Drummond Cairns Facebook page. Start to organise a gaggle early to ensure a place in the field. WET weather gear on, wet weather gear off. Then repeat, all day. Intermittent showers prevailed all day for the Malanda RSL/Falls Teahouse monthly medal, making a heavy track which hampered some of the large field. Employing a new strategy to avoid losing another countback, Ashley Healy put his rather large foot on the throat of the rest of the field and did not let anybody get up by shooting an amazing 77 off the bat to record a brilliant 62 nett to win the event by a clear four shots. Great golfing in heavy conditions, big fella. Looks like the handicapper will be shaving some more shots off as you sneak up towards A grade. Runner-up in the morning field was Trevor Warrener with a solid nett 66. Arran Smith claimed NTP on 5/14 with a really good tee shot into a tricky breeze. In the afternoon field, Keith Dixon carded a nett 66 to claim third after a countback. Kelvin Grove picked up NTP on 1/10. Barb Clifford came in with enough breathing space to claim the women’s monthly medal. Pretty good effort considering the winds are generally harder late afternoon. With new yearly programs in print, not sure what we are playing next week, but I’m sure it will be fun and well worth it. Come on out and have a go. We have clubs you can use, so don’t be shy. Sunday’s monthly medal has now been postponed until next Sunday. Congratulations to our junior Prudence Wright who has been selected in the Peninsula golf team. Prue will be playing at Keperra in Brisbane at the end of April. Our club is committed to junior golf and it is pleasing to see the progress Prue has made over the years. All juniors are welcome, so if you have a child who would like to play, get in touch with the club and we will support them. Nominations are being taken for the Ravenshoe open to be held on April 6-7. Let the club know if you are participating. There is the opportunity to play on either day if you cannot commit to the 36-hole event. Don’t forget the social night this Friday. Bar opens at 5.30pm for dinner at 6.30pm. All welcome to attend.
