BAZZ Goes reckons he has the best job in the world.

The New Zealand-born adventure sport specialist has worked his way up from being a raft guide to being the operations manager of Raging Thunder.

Mr Goes said he couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

“This is a very cool way to be involved in tourism, but I see more than the average person does,” he said.

“My main two pieces of advice for people wanting to work in this industry are: being scared is OK … and keep a really open mind.”

Jobs in tourism are a large drawcard for people turning holidays to Cairns into permanent homes.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive officer Pip Close said skilled middle management tourism workers were in demand in the region.

“Chefs, restaurant supervisors, marine engineers and business events specialists are among the jobs where employers often have to look elsewhere for staff,” she said.

“The larger hotels offer great career paths and the opportunity to work in different regions and countries, which appeals to many people.

“With around 95 per cent of the tourism operators in Tropical North Queensland either small or medium-sized enterprises, it can be difficult to progress within the same business.

“However, we see many … workers shifting to different roles in the region to gain different experiences and skills they need for promotion.”
