Sports clubs want action

A SPORT club director is planning to lobby for more safety measures after yet another break-in at the Edmonton Sporting and Recreation Precinct.

The shared Mulgrave Cricket and Southside Comets clubhouse was smashed into for the second time in a week on Saturday morning, with offenders this time using a give way sign as a battering ram.

Southside Comets technical director and head coach Chris Collins said it was “just absolutely moronic behaviour”.

“There wasn’t much left in the canteen after the last break-in. There was nothing to trash that hadn’t already been trashed,” he said.

“Everyone’s feeling anger, disappointment and total disbelief.”

He said the next step for the club was to ask Cairns Regional Council for help to protect the premises.

“We’ll lobby council for more security,” Mr Collins said.

But Division 2 councillor John Schilling said lobbying wasn’t necessary as council was already stepping in.

“We’ve had conversations with the clubs about this a month ago, and even a week ago,” he said.

“Council will step in and do what needs to be done. We didn’t spend $40 million on the PCYC and sporting complex just for this to happen.”

Cr Schilling said he went down to the grounds on Saturday morning to see the damage to the canteen and equipment himself.

“It’s not an ideal situation by any means,” he said.

“These are not-for-profit groups that are being run by mums and dads and community members. It’s just mindless destruction.”

Southside Comets is running a “bounce back raffle” for the next three weeks to help recoup costs.

Tickets are available at the team’s games.
