Learning the art of leadership

Hayley Campbell, Year 6, Holy Cross School

-

“WHOA,” I gasped, as I walked to the upstairs of the Reef Hotel Casino Cairns.

I was with a group of leaders from my school Holy Cross and we were part of a special Leadership Day.

Our leadership team included school captains, house captains and the Student Representative Council.

Holy Cross School captains are Rebecca Luck and Sampson Little and vice captains are Ameah Reed and Lachlan Christie.

The house captains for Robinson are Natalya Patterson and Nicholas Chappell (red), Petersen is Katelyn McGee and Jai Longee (blue), Dillon is Annabell Hunter and Lachlan Royle (yellow) and Mallon is Brianna Wilkinson and Sam Turner (white).

Our SRC, includes nine of us; Andrianna Francis, Riley O’Neil, Lucas Russell, Jack Bowe, Harry Tottle, Jacqueline Bachei, Ebony Bradberg and me, Hayley Campbell. As we walked into the main room we saw students from many different schools such as Machans Beach, Balaclava State School, Innisfail State School and many more.

This excursion for the leaders was so entertaining. We learnt about how to lead others with the four main core traits; empathy, confidence with humility, reliability and being others-focused.

These all build within us to make a good leader.

There were a lot of activities where we got to share with leaders from other schools. We shared all our ideas.

We played loads of games such as limbo and loud noises.

There was a lot of laughter and enjoyment.

The day was run by the GRIP Leadership team. At the end we got to interview some of them and were able to ask them lots of questions. I recall one of them telling me that being “others-focused” was a trait she tried to live by.
