Brotherly bond in Barron River U15s

- ROWAN SPARKES

CRICKET A CAIRNS cricket club has taken family values to a whole new level, fielding a team that includes not one, not two, but three sets of brothers.

The trio of pairs make up more than half of the Barron River Cricket Club Under-15 first XI and will take the field in this Saturday’s Cricket Far North U15 semi-final against United.

“They’re one of the better teams,” Martin Gillard, 15, said.

“We beat them last time we played, which we were pretty happy about. Hopefully we can do the same this weekend.”

The eldest Gillard, in true sibling fashion, said having younger brother Brian in the team had both pros and cons.

“It’s always good when you’re out there batting with them, “he said. “You always have that connection.

“It can get annoying times,” he laughed.

“But when you’re in the nets and you’re bowling at them all the time, it’s always good fun.”

When asked if he threw the odd short one down to his brother in the nets, Gillard was honest in his answer.

“I try to occasionally, but I haven’t hit him yet.”

With the three sets of brothers at making up more than half the team, there’s a strong bond that has extended to other teammates.

“You can just feel that sense of happiness and teamwork when you have family and people that are really friendly on the team,” said Gillard.

Barron River U15s will take on United U15s in a semi-final this Saturday at Griffiths Park.

In the weekend’s other semi-final, Atherton and Rovers will do battle at Morrow Park, Tolga. The winners will meet in the U15 grand final on Sunday, March 17.

All games are scheduled for 1.30pm starts.
