FNQGA

WE HAVE had a few more clubs nominate to be a part of the Pennants and GoTY /Selection Series format: Pennants: Cairns – Thanks Matt Bolton and Gordonvale – Thanks Jay Lloyd. Selection Series/GoTY; El Arish CC – Thanks. Stewy Worth and Gordonvale GC – Thanks Jay Lloyd. At the last regional junior co-ordinators meeting in December 2018, it was recommended to Cairns GC and HMBGC to move their Junior Opens in July by a week so as not to clash with a state Junior event. This week they have confirmed they wish to do this. The Selection Series and GoTY is a simple process: fill in the form and play golf. Pennants will be a six-club format (Atherton, Cairns, Gordonvale, Innisfail, Mareeba and Mossman) with a semi and final scheduled for Palmer Sea Reef.

MAREEBA

MAREEBA Golf tried its first foray into a tiger Stableford competition on Saturday. My Mareeba Dentist sponsored the event. Thanks to Samuel, Peter and Rani and all the team. Congratulations to Anthoy van Saane and Anthony Mete who had the creditable score of 77 points despite two washouts in a row. We think it’s a good score, but we’ve haven’t played a tiger before to know. The course is in spectacular condition at the moment and should be taken advantage of. Don’t forget the “wizard of swing”, Carl Mattsson, provides free coaching (including the supply of golf balls) on Monday, Tuesday and Friday each week from 3pm and again on Saturdays from 8am. MILLAA MILLAA

THE intermittent showers prevailed again for the John and Yvonne Reynolds stroke event. But 14 keen souls braved the weather and Richard “Sol” Sullivan came in the winner with a 67 nett, Warrick Howarth runner-up with 68 and Arran Smith third with 69. NTPs went to Arran, Graham Murray and Warrick. Hopefully, the weather will be kinder next week for the Bunnings Day Stableford event. Good luck to Mount Garnet which will hold its open next weekend. Don’t forget today, the Summer of Golf is at Millaa Millaa, hit-off at 8.30am. THE rivalry between junior member Prudence Wright and club captain Shane Escott was on display again in the March monthly medal. Prudence took out the event with a 70 nett, while Shane was the gross winner and runnerup for the nett. Next Sunday is St Patrick’s Day, so wear something green and expect some Irish-type prizes. The event is a bogey, so you will need to brush up on the scoring system as we haven’t played one of these for a while. Mount Garnet has its open next weekend so good wishes to our neighbours for a great weekend. Don’t forget that nominations for our open weekend on August 6-7 are open, so contact the club for a tee time. CU@the 19th.

TULLY

ON SATURDAY, members played a single Stableford event on a rather damp course for prizes kindly donated by Rick and Tracey from NewsXpress Tully. The wet conditions certainly didn’t help, with low scoring the order of the day. The best in the wet was Kevin Edwards with 35 points, just ahead of Brice Henry in second place on 34 points. Third place was Darryl Edwards with 33 points. Nearest to the pins for the day were 2/11 Wendy Holloway, and 7/16 Kass Marshall. Thursday’s nine-hole Sporters competition also saw low scoring with six players crowding the leaderboard. After countbacks, Claire Bourke picked up the nine-hole prize. Mike Harris won the six-hole. The rundown went to Betty Favier and Kevin Pease. Nearest to the pins for the afternoon were 2/11 Dave Morris, 3/12 Dave Morris, 5/14 Graham Sinton, 7/16 Claire Bourke, 9/18 B Grade Graham Sinton and C Grade Eric Zamora. With fine weather forecast, tomorrow’s Sporters will be on, hitting off from 12.30pm. Saturday’s event will be a single stroke from 11.30am, sponsored by Pacific Fasteners & Hydraulics.
