Widespread rain prompts flood warning

HEAVY falls are set to drench the entire Far North region for at least another day in the aftermath of Cyclone Trevor.

Rainfall totals of more than 200mm were recorded in various spots including Lockhart River, which bore the brunt of the Category 3 system, and Mossman.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Jess Gardner said of the 302mm which fell at Lockhart, two thirds of it came during a six-hour window as the cyclone crossed the coast.

Flash flooding impacted Cairns streets yesterday morning, while the Daintree Ferry could not take large vehicles in the morning due to king tides.

“There will be areas of rain and heavy falls for the next few days for the whole Peninsula to possibly south of Cairns,” Ms Gardner said.

“(This will continue) into Friday but will clear into the weekend.”

Port Douglas recorded 139mm within 24 hours, while Cairns received 68mm.

Flood warnings remained in place last night for both the Daintree and Mossman Rivers with the Bureau expecting the Daintree River to reach levels around the 8.75m mark which it hit in December last year.

“Levels are not expected to reach the January 2019 flood levels,” the warning said.

A flood watch was also issued for all river systems north of Innisfail to Kowanyama.

A hurricane-force wind warning was in place for the southeast and northeast Gulf.

Cyclone Trevor is expected to impact the Northern Territory coast on Saturday as a Category 4.
