Base station builds to fix black spots

SEVEN mobile black spots across the Far North will be fixed when the state government creates new base stations to improve remote coverage.

Archer River, Bloomfield State School, Elliot Falls, Musgrave River, Bamaga, Rossville and Yarrabah will be targeted in the $11.3 million base station roll out, to be serviced by Telstra and Optus.

Home Rule Rainforest Lodge at Rossville has been in a black spot for as long as the lodge’s manager Gail Anning can remember.

“It could easily be a matter of life or death if you were stranded somewhere and needed to call out,” she said.

“Tourists and visitors would really appreciate that feeling of safety and security.”

Ms Anning said it would also improve business prospects.

“Some clients won’t head out here because of the lack of connectivity,” she said.

“It would be great for Wallaby Creek and the smaller festivals we have too.”

Telstra chief executive Andy Penn said it was a muchneeded upgrade for the Far Northern towns.

“Mobile coverage means people and businesses in re- gional and remote communities can do things many in the city take for granted. Whether it is streaming sports, movies and television, working remotely or just staying in touch,” he said.

Minister for Regional Services Senator Bridget McKenzie said it would boost the growth of remote Far Northern areas.

“Greater availability of mobile services is a big deal,” she said.

“It means more reliable and consistent emergency warnings in time of natural disasters, keeping in contact with family and friends, unlocking access to online health and education services as well as increased tourism and business opportunities.

Round four base stations are expected to be built shortly after June 30 and the first new base stations will be activated in the second half of this year.
