Facts and figures show region’s future looks bright

-

FAR North Queensland’s powerhouse is fast approaching critical mass, according to one of the country’s leading demographers.

An audit of Cairns’ demographics, exclusively compiled by Bernard Salt for the Cairns Post, shows the region is on track for an 18 per cent growth in its population by 2030.

Mr Salt says more strategic planning needs to occur now to accommodate more people over the next decade.

But with expansion and development comes business and employment opportunities, he said.

“It means growth and opportunity – builders, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, shopkeepers – should find Cairns a place of opportunity over the next decade and a half,” Mr Salt said.

Don’t miss the Weekend Post tomorrow, when we launch a two-week campaign dedicated to exploring the future of our region and investigating how we need to prepare for it.

Our journalists have mined the data and spoken to the experts, to allow us to provide you with a snapshot of what a future Cairns might look like – where we will be living, working, playing and travelling.

On Friday, April 5, Mr Salt will be the keynote speaker at the Future Cairns business lunch, held at the Pullman Reef Hotel Casino.
