Fit again Munro on a mission

- ROWAN SPARKES

AFL CAIRNS CAIRNS Lions under-16s centre half-back Connor Munro is hoping to spoil the party for opposition forwards.

Munro and his Cairns Lions representative teammates will travel to Townsville this weekend for the SUNS Academy North Queensland Championships.

The 15-year-old St Augustine’s College student has been itching to get back on the footy field ever since a rotator cuff injury forced him to miss out on semi-final and grand final matches with the Manunda Hawks last season.

“It sucks watching from the sidelines,” Munro said.

“I’ve had to focus on the rehab to get it back up to where it is now, but it’s feeling good.”

Munro picked up the injury towards the end of last season and will make his return from a four-month lay-off at this weekend’s championships.

“I love the competition, the experience, and it’ll be good to play on some good forwards – it always gives me a good challenge.”

Munro said he “can’t wait” to take the field with his teammates.

“It’s good to have a group of mates like this,” he said.

“We’ve been training for the last eight weeks, but a lot of us have known each other for years just through local footy.

“It’s great to play alongside every single one of them.”

The Cairns Lions U16s will be captained by Centrals’ Jack Willis and Cairns Saints’ Oakley Wallace and Joseph Kearsley.
