RE: Funding cuts to Cairns Hospital (CP, 18/04)

Of course Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch knows the truth about suggested funding cuts to Cairns Hospital - it has not happened.

The money has not been withdrawn Elida Faith. Keep factual or produce the valid documents.

It’s a pity in elections these negative comments pop up in desperation. Fortunately the masses know the facts. Naomi Wilson, Bayview Heights roosting in the nationally significant CBD trees. Only five trees currently remain outside the library after 25 roosting trees were cut down in recent years.

Interestingly, the council is not taking the advice of the “advisory committee” it set up.

The council’s most recent plan for dispersal follows their previous proposal to abduct the infants. Their intention to scare the bats off using pyrotechnics, gas guns, stock whips, and air horns does not take into consideration where the bats will end up. Possibly in our backyards?

Flying foxes play a crucial role with the pollination and seed dispersal of our native rainforest trees and are unique to the Wet Tropics.

They have been roosting here long before Cairns was even thought of.

While I personally have enjoyed watching the bats fly off at dusk for nearly 50 years, many tourists have also experienced great enjoyment from seeing the bats in their current location.

Maybe the council should stick to its promise from back in 2015 to create a permanent home in the Cairns CBD for the rapidly declining bats.

It is time for a new plan. Let’s “show” them off rather than scare them off. Amanda Worthington, Goldsborough Estate
