Signs of tribute on region’s roads
A GOVERNMENT grant of more than $20,000 has helped Tablelands Regional Council dig into the history behind its street names.
A $20,364 Commonwealth Government Armistice Centenary Grant has allowed the council to complete a large body of work on the Roads of Remembrance Project.
This project is focused around researching and identifying roads in the region that are named after people, places or events associated with World War I. Mayor Joe Paronella said roads identified under the program would be given new signs marking their historical significance.
“It was great to see the community help us identify these important Tablelands landmarks,” he said.
“The Eacham and Tolga Historical Societies also supplied and verified information.
“Our records did not go back far enough to confirm the history of road names so we used family records, National Archives, military records and other sources and to identify 13 roads in the region.
“In late April these were recognised with new street signs.
“Look for these signs as you travel across the region – they are easily identified by the Australian Defence Force Rising Sun emblem.
“We’ve published the background information on these roads on our website so you can follow the historical paths these roads took.
“This important project acknowledges a significant military conflict in our history and those from our region who played their part.
“It will ensure that we do not forget,” said Mayor Paronella
