A LEADING Cairns-based law firm has won big at the region’s most prestigious business awards held in Cairns at the weekend.

Marrawah Law secured a win in the Indigenous Business Excellence Award category from a strong field of nominated businesses at the Cairns Business Excellence Awards on Saturday.

Principal Solicitor Leah Cameron said the win came as a surprise.

“(But) it was particularly special (to win the award). Our team have all been heads down for the last 12 months … and it was nice to come up for some light and have a look around and see what we have achieved,” she said.

“We were aware (we had been nominated) and there was some very tough competition and some inspiring indigenous businesses who are growing and doing amazing work in our community.”

Marrawah Law deals with commercial, construction and indigenous land law and is a local business success story.

“We are quite specialist in what we do and lots of people think being an indigenous business, we just service other indigenous clientele, but that is not the case. We act for large government organisations, local government and non-indigenous business in the private sector.”

Cairns Chamber of Commerce president Nick Loukas said seeing such a large field contest the Indigenous Business Excellence Award and Dr Ken Chapman winning the Legacy Award were real high points of the night.

“A highlight for me was a fantastic field in the indigenous category, which was very hotly contested this year,” he said.

The awards celebrated business excellence and acknowledged outstanding contribution to the community, and were a great way to build a positive business culture in the region, Mr Loukas said .
