Sunday, June 30: 2019 Mt Baldy open fours. Nomination­s on sheet. Winners from last week: Dave Syme and Bernie McKenzie. No results to hand on the pennant game last Sunday at Marlin Coast. Please note, due to unforeseen circumstan­ces, the roast night to be held on June 21 is cancelled as well as future roast nights until further notice. Barefoot bowls and barbecue on Friday nights. MAREEBA Sports Hall was the venue for the ladies and gents’ singles competitio­n on Saturday, June 15, with some great bowling on the day. The ladies’ winner was Val Jennings on 5pts outright. Jean Sommervill­e was runner-up on 4pts, both from St George Club, Mareeba. The men had quite an interestin­g day with Alan McDonald from Tolga Club, outright winner on 6pts with Joe Schmid and Ivan Coleman from Malanda both on 4pts. But after a countback Joe was runner-up on 33pts total and Ivan on 32pts total, sadly just being pipped at the post. On Saturday, June 22, we will travel to Cairns to play in the Alice Suhle competitio­n. On June 29, we have the big rodeo festival fun day in Mareeba hosted by the local St George Club. Players from all the coastal clubs will be taking part. Please have nomination­s in by June 21 as no late entries will be accepted, unless a replacemen­t. THURSDAY again saw a good roll up of 37 players on the green with the successful team being L Fedalto, D Dunne and S Micale. On the weekend, in the pennants, we saw an improvemen­t but that win still eludes us. On Saturday, in Division 1, two rinks had a win against South Johnstone but unfortunat­ely we still lost overall. On Sunday, we lost to Edge Hill, two rinks to one. Division 3 lost to Tully on Saturday. On Saturday, Division 1 plays West Cairns at Innisfail at 9am. At the request of South Johnstone, Division 3 will play South Johnstone at 9am on their home green. The teams are still being organised so please check the noticeboar­d in the club. MAREEBA and Memorial Bowls Club results, Tuesday, June 11: Thirty bowlers supported our Tuesday bowls. Winners: Amy, Jim, Margaret; Runners-up: Gladys, Neil, Henry. The second round of the Srhoj Shield was played in Atherton on Saturday. Results were: Mareeba won the first round at home by 56 shots followed by a 20-shot win at Atherton. Well done to the Mareeba team. We thank Tito for continuing to sponsor this day in memory of his father Phillip as it creates camaraderi­e between the two clubs. (2 wins + 26). Twelve of our ladies left at 5.30am on Tuesday to play in Tully’s gumboot fours. It will be a long but very enjoyable day. Men’s results In the club championsh­ip fours played on Friday, a win at +8 (22 v 14) to New Fletcher, Bob Hando, Ted Holmes & Dave Blain over Terry Richards, George Wilmot, Don Cook and Bernie Wolland. In the other club championsh­ip games played on Saturday, in the pairs, a win at +7 (21 v 14) to D Cook and Dave Blain over Terry Richards and Billy Smith. In the fours, a win at +6 (22 v 16) to Steve Cue, Peter Gorsuch, Nev Tesch and Eric Smith over John Arnold, Ranald “Eddie” Edwards, Doug Pitt and Col Maxted. In the jackpot bowls played on Saturdays, a win at +1 (22 v 21) to Nev Fletcher, Ken Dunn, Dave Egan over Rob House, John Fleming and Ted Holmes. At +5 (18 v 13) a win to Dick Pitt, Gary Watts and Mick Frese over Gordy, Charlie Toohey and Bernie Wolland. In the club championsh­ip games played on Sunday, in the handicap singles, a win to Bob Hando (-3) over Bernie Wolland (-5) 25 to 14. And in the final for the A grade singles, in a great match that should have been televised nationally, a win to Eric Smith over Gary Tyler 25 to 22. Great bowls by both players. WEDNESDAY, June 12: No bowling due to rain. Saturday, June 15: We had some success with the weather for the Division 3 Silkwood v South Johnstone pennants game at Silkwood. Congratula­tion to South Johnstone, who were the winners by four points. Sunday, June 16: In the club singles championsh­ip game between Jeannette Bucklar and Karin Rastoll, Karin won by six points. Social games: Barry Green and Tony Haydock defeated Ron Gavin and Wayne Mayell by six points. Bill Williams and Wynn Stonehouse/ Agnes Cain defeated Tony Cates and Delmo Tarditi by 15 points. Friday night barefoot bowling is enormous fun. Come along and try our game. Bowls are provided and all are welcome. We start with a barbecue at 6pm followed by a game of bowls and finish with a cuppa and a yummy treat. Squad is: S McInerney, K Deegan, M Roots, T Burns, S Raciti, J Zaini, K Albert, R McCarthy, D Leach, M Hooker, T Edgerton and A Holder. Division 3 defeated Silkwood by four shots. On Saturday, they play Innisfail at 9am at South Johnstone. Team is as per last week and South Johnstone would like to thank Innisfail for accommodat­ing our request for an early start for this game. Sunday, June 16: The final of the men’s fours saw Deegan’s team defeat McCarthy’s team 2115. Congratula­tions to Kevin Deegan, Tony Burns, Santo Raciti and Kel Albert, the South Johnstone 2019 fours champions. Social bowls saw L Mylea and B Anderson defeat L Murray and D Perry 20-13. R McPherson, T Kerrigan and F Caltabiano defeated D Holdsworth, K Villalba and G Heaton 18-15. TWENTY-one players attended the West Cairns green last Monday under ideal playing conditions on the carpet green. which is shaded from any rain. Liz Backhouse and Mick Ford were declared winners. The game, commencing at 1.30pm, is open to any registered player whether local or visiting and lasts for three hours with a break for afternoon tea provided by the club. Cards are called at 1.15pm and we request that all players be present at that time.
