Tough end to Moore’s season

Segeyaro named for Kumuls

- ROWAN SPARKES

QUEENSLAND CUP HE’S only six games into his Queensland Cup career with the Northern Pride, but Ewan Moore has already taken a ride on the rugby league rollercoaster.

After making his debut in the state competition in Round 9 – on less than 24 hours notice, no less – the young backrower wasted no time in making an impression with coaching staff and supporters at the club.

In five consecutive 80-minute performances since, Moore has taken on the workhorse role on the Pride’s left edge, averaging 70 running metres, 30 tackles and two tackle breaks per game.

It’s been a meteoric rise for the rookie edge forward, who started the 2019 season in the QRL’s Colts competition with the Pride under-20s.

However, any hopes of building on his early displays in the second half of the season were cruelly snatched away from the backrower when he suffered a nasty leg injury on the weekend.

The injury blow was a tough one for Moore to take, especially after his rapid rise to the state’s premier competition.

“I’ve been better,” Moore told the Cairns Post yesterday.

“It’s a broken fibula and the syndesmosis (is damaged) as well,” he said.

“I got tackled and my ankle just got caught underneath me ROAD TO RECOVERY: Northern Pride’s Ewan Moore. – my stud’s dug into ground and my ankle rolled.”

The agony could be seen on Moore’s face as he was carried off the field in the 20th minute.

He will undergo surgery next week and is now facing up to five months of rehabilitation. “It’s tough,” he said. “It’s very disappointing, but I guess it’s part of what comes with playing footy.

“You take the good with the bad.”

While his 2019 season is now over, Moore said he was “trying to stay positive”.

“I’ll be back next year,” he said.

“The boys have been really supportive, just telling me to look forward to next year and be ready to rip in again.

“After surgery, I’ll try and get back into the gym as soon as I can.”

the just FORMER Ivanhoes junior James Segeyaro will play his sixth game for Papua New Guinea this weekend.

The Broncos-contracted hooker was named in the Kumuls side to face Samoa at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday.

Segeyaro was born in Goroka, PNG, and moved to Cairns as a seven-year-old.

He started his career at North Queensland in 2011, playing 33 games for the Cowboys before his move to Penrith in 2013. He spent four seasons at the Panthers, playing 70 games before a stint at Cronulla in 2017-18.

Segeyaro was non-contracted at the start of this year, but realised a childhood dream when he linked with the Broncos. He has since played two games for Brisbane, but was suspended for one game after he was caught drink driving.

On Saturday, he will line up alongside Northern Pride-allocated Cowboys Kurt Baptiste, Canterbury’s Rhyse Martin and Burleigh Bears standout Luke Page.
