Bringing some zest into CBD
BELEAGUERED retailers in Shields St in the Cairns CBD are being thrown a lifeline by the Cairns Regional Council to bring some fervour back to the city deadspot.
Entertainment, markets and other activities are to be rolled out to breathe life into the area which has suffered since the street closed.
The council is expected today to trial a new program at a cost of about $49,000.
From August 1 until October 20 it will include 11 Sundays on Shields events with entertainment, pop up markets, workshops and community activities involving the creative art programs at CQUniversity, James Cook University and TAFE.
My Pathways will provide a community expo-type stall and a children’s active play area.
The Esplanade markets will shift to Shields St on a trial basis three times.
Live music will be provided on Fridays and Saturdays from 1-4pm and 5-8pm and Cycas Circus will also busk.
The ‘Shields Street Activation Trial Initiatives’ will target local people, especially families, providing free carparking at the Lake St parking station. It will be heavily promoted.
A council report to be considered by councillors today said: “The redevelopment of Shields Street, while welcomed, has also changed the dynamic of the space due to road and footpath closures. Some traders are of the opinion that the redevelopment has hindered their business.”
The majority of traders support the initiatives.
Instead of placing the issue in the too-hard basket the council has acted and provided a solution.
It deserves to be a success. Nick Dalton Deputy editor
