Marlin Coast prevails in tight Weipa finish

- JORDAN GERRANS

LAWN BOWLS MARLIN Coast claimed the major prize at one of the biggest events on the Far North Queensland lawn bowls calendar in Weipa last week.

The Marlin Coast team was led by local quartet Evelyn Herwig, Christine Scott, Edna Parkes and Jeanette Ward.

The week kicked off with the Weipa Shield, a fours event that comprised teams from Cairns, West Cairns, Weipa, Edmonton, Marlin Coast and Edge Hill.

The end result came down to the last day, and the outcome hinged on the very last bowl of the last end of the whole competition.

The winner was decided by the smallest of margins.

Third was Brothers Edmonton with 105 shots and an aggregate of 1.17, while Cairns was second with 105 shots and an aggregate of 1.25.

That gave the title to Marlin Coast, which had 114 shots and an aggregate of 1.39.

Marlin Coast’s Scott said her team was surprised and overwhelmed.

“But, it just shows that consistency can sometimes pay off, and it’s never over until the last bowl has been delivered,” Scott said.

“Congratulations also go to the Weipa Bowls Club, whose organisation of this year’s event, together with their hospitality, made it a competition that will long be remembered.

“This was largely due to the generosity of the club itself, but mention must be made of their lady members who billeted the majority of players.”

The Marlin Coast ladies thanked the Cairns Mayor’s Discretionary Fund, which helped cover their costs.
