Tully mill worker and keen fisherman Peter Mcclounan, 51, has been remembered as generous to a T.

“He was absolutely brilliant,” best friend Brenton Schilling said.

“We met about 12 years ago when I first came to Queensland and we became best mates from the word go.

“He loved his fishing, loved a laugh and he was renowned for playing the spoons.”

It is understood Mr Mcclounan was also caring for his 86-year-old father.

“He is still in shock – I’m coming to terms with it myself,” Mr Schilling said.

Around Tully Mr Mcclounan was known as a “down to earth, lovely guy”.

Cavs Outdoor and Marine manager Matthew Cavallaro said the local fisherman supported local businesses in his hometown. “He was very generous and very easygoing,” Mr Cavallaro said. “He would go out fishing whenever the weather was right.”

Mr Mcclounan was killed on or near railroad tracks at Murray Street on the weekend.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said a man was seen via CCTV walking around Tully throughout Friday night before disappearing from view about 12.30am Saturday.

Officers were called to Murray St at 6.30am when cane train drivers discovered Mr Mcclounan’s body near train tracks.

Police believe the man could have been under the influence of alcohol and decided to sleep on or near the tracks before being hit by a train about 3.30am.

Officers will prepare a report for the coroner.

Mr Mcclounan was not on shift at Tully Sugar at the time of the accident.

Tully Sugar company secretary Nathan Holmes said the company was “co-operating with the police investigation into the death of our employee and providing appropriate support to our employees at this difficult time, including general counselling and individual as required”.
