Full steam ahead for new team on block

AFTER years of working in other people’s kitchens, a Port Douglas couple is fulfilling a dream by opening a hip new cafe at Holloways Beach.

Chef Althea Moos and barista Daniel Williams have teamed up to present a Palm Springs in the tropics-inspired cafe serving breakfast and lunch.

Two Blocks cafe, serving fresh and healthy meals made entirely in-house, will begin its first day of trade next week.

The dog and vegan-friendly cafe will focus on fresh home baked cakes, slices, croissants, pastries and a modern brunch menu.

“And we are also going to be offering a grab-and-go style menu. For people in a rush, we will be open from 6.30am so they can grab some food on the way to work and some really nice coffee from Blackbird,” Mr Williams said.

Ms Moos, originally from South Africa, has worked in both big commercial kitchens and popular inner-city Melbourne restaurants before making the move to work in a Port Douglas resort five years ago.

Mr Williams, from the UK, has been working in the hospitality industry for seven years in Australia.

“To be able to work for yourself and be creative and make what you want to make without any limits is fantastic,” Mr Williams said.

“We just want the possibility to create menus and new items as soon as we want, based on the season, so everything is nice and fresh, using local produce.”

The progressive and modern minimalist-styled cafe on the corner of Oleander and Bamboo streets, next to Holloways Beach Pizza, will begin trading on Monday.
