Squad kicks goals in tough Bill Turner Cup

By Luca Mauro and Ngailu Thompson, Year 8, St Augustine's College

ON August 5, the St Augustine’s College Bill Turner Squad flew down to Brisbane to compete in the state finals of the Bill Turner Cup.

As the rest of the school was involved in camps and retreats, our normal coach and manager Terry McDonough and Jon Sorenson were unable to join us and so Glen Waddingham (parent of Thomas in Year 9) and Caroline Cienciala (Saints teacher) accompanied us on our trip to Brisbane.

For our first match we were playing for a place in the state final. We came up against Chancellor State College from Mooloolaba, on the Sunshine Coast.

Despite the fact that we lost 2-1, we played really well but Aaron Dempsey’s goal wasn’t quite enough to see us through.

The last 10 minutes of the game were hard fought with every player stepping up to the challenge.

We then headed into the playoff for third and fourth hoping to come away with the bronze and we did exactly that with our 5-3 victory over Palm Beach Currumbin State High.

The highlight of this match was Thomas Waddingham’s hat-trick, with single goals to both Blake May and Liam Bruce.

After our playoff game we were lucky enough to watch the girls from Cairns State High win their state final clash for the Bill Turner Trophy against Kelvin Grove State College, and they will now progress to the national finals in Newcastle.

We would like to sincerely thank Mrs Cienciala and Mr Waddingham for taking us on the trip, for their generosity and for stepping up as our coach/manager and we look forward to the Bill Turner Cup in 2020.
