Tigers SOS real sign of a club in trouble

- with Jordan Gerrans

BOUNDARY RIDING THIS grainy photo (below) of North Cairns’ scoreboard from Saturday is funny but also pretty sad for the state of the club – and the competition as well.

After two straight losses, Port Douglas were going to smack most AFL Cairns sides as they did on Saturday afternoon to the hapless Tigers.

Hopefully there is some help on the way for the Watsons Oval-based Tigers to get them competitive once again.

There were signs that results like this were on the way as early as the first couple of rounds of 2019 for the Tigers.

To make matters worse, North also forfeited their reserves on Saturday afternoon.

AFL Cairns have been meeting with the Tigers hierarchy throughout the season to devise a plan going forward.

■ CENTRALS Trinity Beach coach Wayne Sharkie will be back for a second season at Crathern Park after the two parties agreed to go around again in 2020 recently.

While Sharkie’s Doggies are unlikely to play finals footy in his first year, most would think he has been a great appointment for the club and turned it around after their situation looked pretty bleak at the start of 2019.

He is dedicated to his craft and is an asset to the competition to keep bringing in high level coaches from Victoria.

■ CAIRNS product Caleb Graham will not forget his second AFL game anytime soon as he was front and centre in Jarryd Roughead’s farewell game at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.

The Hawthorn champion kicked six goals in what may be his final game.

The Cairns Saints junior and fellow Suns defender Charlie Ballard spent time on the retiring legend.

“It was pretty surreal. The crowd was really loud and it was a great opportunity,” Ballard said.

“He was a great player of the game. I remember growing up watching him and the three-peat.

“He is such a great player then all of a sudden I’m going up and playing against him.

“It’s one of those weird things. It’s the same when you play against Dustin Martin and Buddy Franklin.”
