Cyclone ready for anything

- JORDAN GERRANS

FOLLOWING his victory in the 2019 IGA Cup at Cannon Park, gelding Cyclone Path has a sudden arrogance about him.

For Gold Coast trainer John Zielke, the five-year-old has a completely different attitude after the Cairns victory earlier this month, which was quickly followed up with a fair effort in the Cairns Cup just seven days later.

Cyclone Path is accepted for the $30,000 Townsville Amateurs Cup at Cluden Park on Saturday afternoon but was the first emergency late yesterday, hoping for a scratching from the 16 horse field for the 2000m event.

“He is only a Class 3 horse and he appears to have learnt from that first crack at open company,” Zielke said.

“We threw him in the deep end in the Cairns Cup, he is a tough little horse and he went well. “He is a different horse now around the stable, he has become an overnight veteran, his attitude is better.

“He has the ‘hey look at me, I am a man now’ attitude and I am really happy with him.”

Cyclone Path set the pace at Cannon Park in the Cup as eventual winner The Harrovian sat midfield for much of the trip and took over just after the 200m mark.

Innisfail hoop Mark Elliott took the ride on Cup Day and will retain the pilot’s job on Saturday, if the gelding can get a start.

There is also an array of Far North interests in the $30,000 Townsville Amateurs Sprint, with Grey Missile the topweight. As well as Townsville Amateurs Cup this weekend, Atherton Turf Club will host a rare Sunday meeting, with five non-TAB races.
