WITH 102 pages of architectural plans, there was never any doubt as to the level of attention to detail displayed in Far North Queensland’s 2019 House of the Year.

Bungalow-based La Spina Homes took out the award for the Vasey Esp, Trinity Beach masterpiece at Saturday’s Master Builders Far North Queensland Housing and Construction Awards at the Cairns Convention Centre.

The business was also recognised for best home renovation/remodelling project over $2 million for the Berther residence.

The Trinity Beach renovation project was a complete strip-out and rebuild of an existing 1990s dual occupancy building. Builder Matthew La Spina said design and attention to detail from Shaun Lockyer Architects was the hallmark of the home.

“Every room the judges went into they were in awe, every single part of the house was designed to such a high level of finish and design,” he said.

“It is a bit of a jaw-drop. The architect put so much time into it. There were 102 pages of plans to work from. He did such a good design working with the client and it was just our job to put it together.

“It couldn’t really be built without the guys on the ground. It was a pleasure working with the architect and the owner.”

Mr La Spina said the American oak doors and natural stone tiles were a standout feature in the home.

A roofed gate house with dry stack stone walls greets visitors and the stone wall design continues throughout the home and creating a warm, earthy feel.

Judges commented on the “extreme level of difficulty required in the renovation of the existing house” and remarked that “every aspect of this house is amazing, the level of detailing with multiple finishes and materials, the use of specialised items required the workmanship to be of a very high standard”.

Master Builders’ Far North Queensland regional manager Sharon Vella congratulated the winners.

“The standard of entries in this year’s awards program was extremely impressive, it definitely makes our judges’ job harder,” Ms Vella said.
