Festival goes to thrilling heights
Special Suburban Satellites performances give young stars a stage
THE Cairns Festival is heading to the suburbs this week with a thrilling circus performance showcasing the region’s future stars.
Brisbane circus company, Circa will present the circus escapade, Carnival of the Animals – Unleashed, as part of the second instalment of the Festival Suburban Satellites program tonight.
The show was adapted by Circa to suit a team of 12 performers aged 8 to 18, brought together from around Cairns.
Circa associate director Libby McDonnell said the organisation had been working intensively over the past week with the group to get ready for the show tonight.
“It’s been very inspiring to see the energy, enthusiasm and talent on display from the young circus artists that will be the next great performers one day,” she said.
“This is the first time we’ve transformed one of our adult ensemble shows fully onto a young circus group, and they’ve risen to the challenge.”
Cairns performer Maya Hasall, 15, said she hoped the experience would help her pursue a future in theatre after finishing school.
“It’s a really fun show, and there’s a lot of cool transformations, people turning into animals, making shapes, it’s very creative,” she said.
Carnival of the Animals – Unleashed is on tonight at Sugarworld Parklands, Edmonton from 9pm.
Other Suburban Satellite events this week include JCU Light Moves at Lake Placid on Wednesday, and Moving AHead at Deadman’s Gully Park, Clifton Beach.
Musician Tyrone Noonan, who directed last night’s The Voice of the River event at Redlynch said Suburban Satellites were a great way to give a voice to the outlying Cairns communities.
“They’re doing great work with the festival, I came up here for last year’s and every time I visit Cairns I fall in love with the place,” he said.
