Lions talent roaring

- ANDREW HAMILTON

BRISBANE’S stunning ascent up the AFL ladder has been recognised by All Australian selectors who have named five Lions in the preliminary 40man squad.

Skipper Dayne Zorko, a 2017 All Australian, vice-captain Harris Andrews and ball magnet Lachie Neale have made the squad before but it is the first time for goal sneak Charlie Cameron and thirdyear sensation Hugh McCluggage. All must be considered very good chances to make the final side when it is announced tomorrow night.

The last time Brisbane were so well represented was in 2004, the year of their last grand final appearance, when five players made the final All Australian side.

Only reigning premier West Coast with seven players and minor premiers Geelong with six are better represented.

Richmond, the Lions’ opponents in the qualifying final, have four.

Lions football manager David Noble said the selection was well-earned by the five players, who were all in the middle of career-best seasons.

“It is great recognition and well justified for the five and there are probably a couple that are stiff,’’ Noble said.

“But it is also great recognition for the whole team, the coaches and the team of medical people behind them.’’

Noble was particularly thrilled with the selection of McCluggage, who at 21 is the youngest player in the squad.

He was also thrilled the selectors recognised the change of role for skipper Dayne Zorko this year and appreciated its impact on the team.

Zorko has spent more time forward this season to give greater midfield exposure to youngsters such as McCluggage and Jarrod Berry.

In addition to the threat in front of goals, he has become the premier pressure player in the league.

“I think he has been such an invested team player with us, there are things we ask him to do and there is no hesitation,” Noble said. “And to get recognised for that is pleasing.’’

Noble identified Daniel Rich as one Lion who could consider himself unlucky not to make the squad after the best season of his career.

Dual Brownlow medallist Gary Ablett could join his father Gary as a nine-time All Australian if he is chosen in the final team.
