A CAIRNS building firm has been recognised for its commitment to sustainable housing for the fourth year in a row.

MyStyle Homes’ 2019 Excellence in Sustainable Living gong for its build MyCastle was one of six at last weekend’s Master Builders Far North Queensland awards night.

Grant Hartwig, who coowns the company with Heather Ghidella, said “building green, sustainable homes with maximum liveability incorporated into the design is something very close to our heart”.

“When designing homes, I continue to tweak features from where a window is located to its type in regard to the orientation of the home, all to capture maximum cooling breezes,” Ms Ghidella said.

“We then look at shading of the sun’s penetration to create a home that is very cool to live in.

“These are just some of the small changes that can dramatically improve a home’s liveability and save the owner thousands in cooling costs.”

Mr Hartwig said: “(MyCastle) achieved an outstanding 9.9-star energy-efficient rating.

“Building green homes in the tropics is something that is fundamental to what we do, and in our display homes we take it to the next level so we can showcase just what is possible when creating the ultimate energy efficiency in our home designs.”

The business also won best home over $2 million and Ms Ghidella said the pair relished “opulent designs that push style boundaries and allow us to use innovative technology”.

“Working on sloping sites is something our team has become extremely good at, given the beautiful landscape of Cairns and the many hills surrounding our city,” Ms Ghidella said.

“To be recognised for excellence in this area, winning Best Use of Sloping Site, is something that is a testament to both our design and build teams.

“We are so proud that our team can produce something of this quality, and be recognised in our industry as a multi-award-winning builder of liveable, green and sustainable designs at an affordable price.

“Grant and I are perfectionists, and we have very high expectations of our entire team, so we deliver the high attention to detail in every home.”
