The institutions that rely on government funding have produced a report saying the Reef is in poor to very poor condition (CP, 31/08). That guarantees their government funding will continue. They are unlikely to ever say the Reef is fine as that would threaten their funding. See the real problem? Joanne, Manunda

Ayers Rock was there before any human so everybody has a right to climb it. My husband and I have climbed it and our sons were looking forward to it in the future but now they won’t go there at all if it’s closed to climbing. The resort nearby will shut down and Alice Springs will be a ghost town because the visitor numbers will stop and their young people will have no work. Sue, Port Douglas

Unfortunately Byron Burman is probably right. We probably will be driving electric cars trucks etc. Powered by renewable energy in the future. This will come at enormous cost with constant electricity grid failures along the way. By powering everything using electricity we will need to at least quadruple the grid and without a reliable power source this is not achievable. With the massive amount of money wasted we could drought proof and feed the world 10 times over. And after all the heartache and fiscal own goals what difference will it make to the climate? Virtually nothing! Robbo, Gordonvale

Mr Percey re: gun control. The old fallacious argument propagated by the immature that people not guns injure people. For a safe society one of the offending elements need to be removed. No well adjusted adult needs a gun. Malcolm, Westcourt

Congratulations to Aurukun school for achieving most improved NAPLAN results in the state. Well done. Great results. Kerry and Pumpkin, Holloways Beach

While none of us know all the facts, if every court in the land says you are not a refugee then so be it. Just because you don’t like the decision doesn’t mean you can disregard it. Beth, Kanimbla

Eve Stafford (CP, 31/08). Do what people from further afield have to do if they know they cannot get to the airport on time. Stay overnight in Cairns to avoid any closure of the range. Targa GBR is a once a year event which brings so many benefits to the whole region. BJ, Tolga
