New business is bringing buzz back to town

A SMALL Tablelands town has been reinvigorated by the opening of its newest cafe.

In the Millaa Millaa Main St spot where De Millaa’s used to operate, Heidi Blake has started Barista in the Mist.

The opening early last month was hard won, with Ms Blake initially calling for donations to renovate the cafe building after moving to Far North Queensland with her three children from the state’s south.

The cosy business with polished floorboards now turns out coffees, milkshakes and toasted sandwiches to grateful locals and tourists.

The past weekend was one of the busiest for Ms Blake.

“We had the spring markets in Millaa on Saturday, some vintage cars, motorbikes and (on Sunday) the Targa came to town and while we didn’t have the cars driving through or parked in town, we had drivers, crew, volunteer marshals and more supporting our little business,” she told social media followers. “(There were) beautiful bikes and locals and visitors alike, and little fluffy friends enjoying their free water provided out the front.”

Ms Blake has also asked for menu suggestions from the community and explained the food on offer was a “work in progress”.

“As we grow, I can introduce more items,” she said.

A week ago, the cafe fed dance act Justice Crew while members were in the region.

Ms Blake said she hoped she could “continue to bring new life to this town”.

Earlier this year, Millaa Millaa cafe and newsagent Rumours Diner & News closed.
