Harbrow honoured for second year running

-

AFL Cairns product Jarrod Harbrow took out the Gold Coast Suns Community Award at their best and fairest awards on Saturday night, for the second year running.

The running defender has been a leader in the indigenous mentoring space for many years, having launched his Harbrow Mentoring program in 2018.

The 31-year-old has recently evolved his program to incorporate more indigenous female athletes.

He played a huge role in helping Far North teenage AFLW indigenous player Kitara Whap-Farrar (South Cairns) and draft prospect Tiarna Ahwang (North Cairns) relocate from Cairns and settle into life on the Gold Coast.

He and wife Emma housed the pair and taught them critical life skills such as cooking, cleaning and budgeting.

Harbrow’s efforts saw him nominated by the club for the AFL-wide Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award.

He also finished fourth in their best and fairest count.

■ Cairns apprentice jockey Scott Gittos rode a winning double at Julia Creek Turf Club on Saturday, which included the $12,000 Julia Creek Cup Open Handicap (1350m).

Gittos, who claims 3kg in the bush, put together a raceto-race double for trainer Kerry Krogh to finish the fiverace non-TAB program.

He lifted Dutch Twist at $10 in the Class B Handicap (1350m), winning by four lengths, before riding Snippy Strategic in the Cup.

From barrier three, Gittos got Snippy Strategic home by 0.2 lengths from the Steven Royes-trained Kapset.

Gittos took a full book of rides at Julia Creek.

■ Former Manunda Hawk Cameron Duffy was named in Glenorchy’s best but it was not enough to get them over the line against Lauderdale in the first week of the Tasmanian state league finals.

In the qualifying final, Lauderdale claimed a six-point victory over Glenorchy at Blundstone Arena.

The defeat now sends Duffy and his Magpies to a do-or-die finals clash with Launceston Blues, who defeated the Tigers by 55-points in the Elimination Final.

The game was Duffy’s 100th for the club.
