Aspiring vet can chase her dreams

-

A STUDENT vet who grew up on a farm on the Tablelands is taking her studies interstate with support from friends and teachers back home.

James Cook University veterinary student Amy Bevan was rewarded with a $1000 bursary from Tablelands Regional Council last week.

Ms Bevan grew up on a dairy farm, went to school in Ravenshoe and was driven to become a vet through her passion for the dairy industry.

Her studies have allowed her to travel to refine her abilities and become closer to the animals she hopes to one day work with.

The bursary came at the end of an external placement in dairy cattle medicine at Matamata Veterinary Services in New Zealand.

“I gained invaluable practical skills with regards to surgery and obstetrical intervention with dairy cattle,” Ms Bevans said.

“I appreciate this bursary because education and experience should not be limited by finances, even though it is the harsh reality for many students.

“The bursary will not only help my bank account recover from previous placements, but will assist me later in the year when I travel to western Victoria for my last elective placement.”

The TRC Veterinary Bursary recognises academic excellence by a local JCU undergraduate studying their fifth and final year at Tableland Veterinary Service.

In congratulating Amy on the presentation of the bursary, Councillor Dave Bilney said they recognised the hard work and commitment Ms Bevan put into her studies at home and abroad.

“It is wonderful to see our local young people thriving and following their passion,” he said.

“This bursary is an excellent example of Council, industry and tertiary institutions working together to support our youth to achieve their aspirations.”
